Outdoors path
Field skills
A day hike and an overnight ask the same questions: where you are, what the sky is doing, how you'll stay dry, and how you'll drink. Work these in order. Stay on trails and public land you have a right to use.

-
Know where you are
A map, a compass you have practiced with, and a plan to turn around. Phones help until they don't.
-
Read the day
Check the forecast before you leave. Watch the sky once you're out. Weather is why trips get short or stay out.
-
Fire when you need it
Heat, cooking, and a signal — and the judgment to leave it unlit when the woods are dry or the rules say no.
-
Stay dry and out of the wind
A tarp, a bag, or a hut you already carry. Shelter is faster than a perfect fire.
-
Water in the field
Carry enough for the walk. Know how you'd treat a stream if you had to. Don't guess at still water.
-
Field first aid
Blisters, cuts, heat, and cold. This is not medical advice — see the disclaimer — and it is not a reason to go farther than you should.
